I almost never gravitate towards a soft color palette. In fact, I don´t own anything pastel. For some reason, I feel like this color palette just does not reflect my personality, as I am usually drawn towards black, jewel tones and neutrals when having to choose colors for anything in life. But it was time to finally wear this Elizabeth and James tunic I have had hanging in my closet for over a year, and the baby blue bralette turned out to be the perfect compliment, and to keep the look from being too soft and romantic, I added a pair of vintage cut-off´s.
Now, let´s talk about the shoes (there is always a story behind the shoes), which I scored for $20. I know some people find the thought of wearing second-hand clothing and shoes rather strange, but in my humble opinion, these pieces add character to any look since they are already worn in from living a life in someone else´s closet. I found these shoes while searching through racks and racks of consigned Moschino, YSL, and Dolce & Gabanna at an incredible designer resale shop, and when I saw them on the bottom shelf, I knew these strappy, lace-up wedges belonged in my closet.
Casi nunca me atraen los colores pasteles. De hecho ni tengo nada de esta paleta. Por alguna razón siento que los colores pasteles no proyectan mi personalidad y por eso siempre mi inclino más por el negro, los tonos de gemas y neutrales cuando escojo colores para cualquier cosa en la vida. Pero fue hora de por fin ponerme este túnico de Elizabeth and James que lleva más que un año colgado en mi guardarropa, y el bralette azulito fue el complemento perfecto, y para que el look no se viera demasiado lindo y romántico, puse unos shorts de mezclilla vintage.
Ahora, hay que hablar de los zapatos (siempre hay una historia detrás de los zapatos!), que me costaron $20. Sé que a mucha gente se les hace raro poner ropa y zapatos de segunda mano, pero en mi opinión humilde, creo que estas piezas agregan carácter a tus looks porque ya han vivido otra vida en el guardarropa de alguien más. Encontré estos taconcitos mientras que veía varias piezas de Moschino, YSL, y Dolce & Gabanna en una tienda increible que re-vende artículos de marca, y cuando los vi en un repiso abajo, supe que los taconcitos de Nicole Miller con tirantes pertenecían en mi guardarropa.

Red, White and Blue Jean

Wearing red, white and blue on the Fourth of July has been a tradition embedded in me since I was young. I vividly remember going to Old Navy each year to buy their annual American flag shirt to wear to a barbeque and watch fireworks later on that night. Even though I have lived in Mexico for over six years now and have not officially celebrated the holiday, besides one memorable party I threw with friends here a few yeas back, wearing red, white and blue around the Fourth of July is still a tradition that has remained with me and has become my way of celebrating. I know a lot of people around the world have their disagreements with the United States, and yes, our country certainly has its flaws, but I could not be more proud to be born in such a great country, one that is full of opportunity and inspires ambition. Every time I travel home, I am so thankful and proud to be carrying a United States passport in my hand.
And speaking of Fourth of July fashion, I am wearing this year´s take on red, white and blue: a nautical cami, white jeans, a red bag, a trusty fedora and a “blue jean” jacket. Being born and raised in the south, I learned that “blue jean” or “blue jeans” is a synonym for any kind of denim, even if the fabric is not blue. So, if you are wearing purple jeans and someone in the south compliments you on your “blue jeans”, don´t feel confused. I have come a long way since picking out my American flag shirt from Old Navy, but I will never give up wearing our patriotic colors for the Fourth of July.
Happy birthday weekend to my forever Soulmate, to whom if I say “blue jeans”, she knows exactly what I am talking about!
Poniendo rojo, blanco y azul en el 4 de julio es una tradición que ha sido grabado en mi desde mi niñez. Yo siempre me acuerdo llendo a Old Navy para comprar la playera del año con la bandera americana para ponerme para la carne asada y para ver cuetes más tarde. Aunque he vivido en México por más de 6 años ahora y no he festejado el día festivo oficialmente desde entonces, aparte de una fiesta que tuve hace varios años, la tradicción de ponerme rojo, azul y blanco ha quedado conmigo y ha vuelto en ser mi manera de festejar. Sé que hay mucha gente en el mundo que tiene sus desacuerdos con los Estados Unidos y entiendo que nuestro país tiene sus defectos , pero no pude ser más orgullosa de nacer un país tan grande, uno que está lleno de oportunidades y inspira ambición.Cada vez que viajo a mis tierras, estoy agradecida y orgullosa de traer mi pasaporte de los Estados Unidos en la mano.
Y hablando de la moda del 4 de julio, traigo puesta la versión de rojo, blanco y azul: una blusa marinera, pantalones de mezclilla blancos, bolsa roja, mi gorrito leal, y una chamarra “blue jean”. Haber nacida y criada en el sur de los Estados Unidos, aprendi que la expresión “blue jean” o “blue jeans” es un sinónimo para cualquier tipo de mezclilla, aunque el color de la mezcillia no es azul. Entonces si traes pantalones de mezcilla morados y alguien del sur te dicen que te agradan tus “blue jeans” no te sientes confundida. He llegado muy lejos de mis días de escoger la playera con la bandera americana de Old Navy, pero nunca dejaré de ponerme los colores patrióticos del 4 de julio.
Y feliz cumple a mi Media Naranja, quien entiende la expresión de “blue jeans” 😉

Wedding Season

Summer is in full swing, which means wedding season is at its peak. So if you are like me and have a few (or several) Save-the-Date´s on your fridge at the moment, then it´s important you have a few dresses on hand that make you feel your best, a go-to hairstyle that you can do yourself and great accessories that can take your outfit to the next level. Attending weddings can get awfully expensive between the travel, gifts, salon appointments, showers and other pre-wedding actitivies, so you definitely want to be prepared with a bullet-proof wedding wardrobe so you are not rushing to the mall in a frantic frenzy to buy a new dress that you probably won´t like next week.
I definitely recommend having at least one, if not two dresses, that you really absolutely love for daytime weddings, weddings that call for cocktail attire and finally, black-tie occasions. For shoes and accessories, it´s much easier. All you need are a pair of black, nude and metallic heels in either a pump or a strappy style, depending on your preference, that you can recycle and rewear until the heel tips come off. And last but not least, your accessories, the icing on the cake and the most crucial part of the equation. I have been wearing the same accessories for about 6 years now, mixing and matching them over and over: a statement necklace, a set of bejeweled bangles, 2 statement bracelets, 3 pairs of statement earrings, a cocktail ring and a gold clutch, and if you ask me, this is all you really need. Find versatile pieces that you really love and make you feel your best, and learn how to mix and match your dresses, shoes and accessories to create new looks for each occasion. Being creative is not picking out a new dress at the mall for each wedding; being creative is using what you already have and creating something new.
I wore this oldie but very-goodie Notte by Marchesa dress to a dear friend´s civil wedding this past weekend. I was probably a tad overdressed for a daytime ceremony, but since Mexicans get Oscar-ready for weddings, I thought I would play it safe with metallics, red lips, my trusty statement accessories and a romantic DIY hair style. Thank you to Paola and Aurelio for having me be part of your special day, and I wish you the best in this next chapter. Felicidades y que viva el amor!
El verano está aqui, lo que significa que la temprada de las bodas está en el pico. Si eres como yo y tienes unas (o muchas) invitaciones en tu refrigerador, es importante que tienes algunos vestidos a la mano que te hacen sentir bien, un peinado que puedes hacer tu misma y unos excelentes accessorios que te pueden llegar tu look al siguiente nivel. Asistir bodas te puede salir muy caro, entre los gastos de viaje, regalos, citas de belleza, despedidas y otras actividades pre-boda, asi que quieres estar preparada con un guardarropa de bodas para que no estás llendo al mall con mucha prisa para comprar un nuevo vestido que probablemente no te va a gustar la siguiente semana.
Definitivamente recomiendo tener a lo menos uno, si no dos vestidos, que te encantan para bodas de día, bodas de coctél y por fin ocasiones de “smoking”. Para zapatos y accessories, es más facil. Sólo necesitas unos tacones de negro, color de piel, y metálicos en el estilo de “pump” o de tirantes, dependiendo de tu preferencia, que puedes re-usar y recilcar hasta que se te quitan los puntos del tacón. Y por último, los accessories, el vetún del pastel y el elemento más importante de la ecuación. Yo he estado usando los mismos accessorios durante 6 años, mezclándolos y combinándolos de maneras diferentes para cada evento: un collar adornado, un set de pulseras chiquitas, 2 pulseras adornados, 3 pars de aretes brillantes, un anillo coctél y una bolsa dorada, y eso es todo lo que necesitas si me preguntas a mi. Encuentra piezas versátiles que te encantan y te hacen sentir bien, y aprende mezclar y combinar tus vestidos, zapatos y accessorios para crear nuevos looks para cada ocasión. Ser creativa no es ir a la tienda y escoger un nuevo vestido; ser creativa es usar lo que ya tienes para crear algo nuevo.
Yo puse este vestido viejo pero bueno de Notte por Marchesa para la boda civil de una de mis mejoras amigas este fin pasado. Probablemente me arreglé demasiado por una ceremonía de día, pero cómo los mexicanos se arreglan si fueran a los Oscares para las bodas, quería estar segura con metálicos, labios rojos, mis accessories fieles y un peinado romántico que me hice. Muchas gracias a Paola y Aurelio por compartirme su día especial, y los deso lo mejor en este nuevo capítulo. Felicidades y que viva el amor!

I Showed Up With a Recipe: Viva México!
Just as I do with clothes and accessories, I love to combine flavors and textures in the kitchen. I have not showcased any food posts on my blog because my kitchen is tiny and so un-photogenic, which makes photographing food slightly unmotivating, but I really want to share more food posts because for me, cooking is creating and creating is what this blog is all about.
I have been living in Mexico for over 6 years now, and I have thoroughly enjoyed the country´s rich gastronomy. I even graduated from not being able to tolerate any type of salsa to not being able to live without it! I can´t say I have mastered enchiladas or chiles en nogadas, but I can make a few basic Mexican dishes and definitely enjoy incorporating typical ingredients and flavors into my food.
To celebrate Mexico scoring a spot in the next round of the 2014 World Cup, I wanted to share one of my favorite snacks: tostadas con guacamole. I usually just throw together guacamole and smear it on a tostada, but since I wanted them to be more filling, I added frijoles refritos and queso asadero and washed them down with a limeade-beer mixture. I like how my Mexican snack turned out, and it seriously tasted as if Mexico had exploded in my mouth. Keep scrolling to read my “recipe”:
If these pictures make you hungry and you have a pretty low jalapeño tolerance, here is what you need (serves 1-2 people):
- 1 avocado
- 1/2 small tomato, chopped
- 1/4 red onion, chopped
- 1/2 jalapeño, chopped
- 2 limes, juiced
- Salt and pepper
- Refried beans
- Cheese
- Tostadas
Just throw the avocado, tomato, onion, jalapeño, lime juice, salt and pepper together, mix and then build your tostadas. Beans. Cheese. Guacamole. Repeat.
I don´t even know what this drink is called, but my (Mexican) boyfriend always mixes a beer with his limonada at restaurants and it is so tasty and refreshing:
- 1 beer of your choice
- 2 limes, juiced
- 1 tsp. of sugar
Mix. Drink. Repeat.

Kate Moss is Boss

If I could raid anyone´s closet, it would without a doubt be Kate Moss´s. And even though probably nothing would fit me, I would love to get my hands on her enviable collection of denim, blazers, jackets, coats and boots. What I love about her style, besides it being I-just-threw-this-on-to-go-smoke-a-cigarette effortless, is that every thing Kate puts on is very wearable. I think this makes her style easy to channel and is the reason why she is a fashion icon, because what Kate wears, I can also wear. She has a lot of basics and punches them up with an offbeat coat or rockin´ boots. Clearly, Kate Moss The Style Boss, has inspired today´s look of basic black denim and a slouchy tank, dressed up with a tuxedo blazer and funky accessories. I may not look as cool as Kate does, but I sure do feel like it!
Si pudiera robar del guardarropa de quien quería, definitivamente sería lo de Kate Moss. Y aunque es muy probably que nada me quedaría, me encantaría tener su colección enviable de mezclilla, sacos, chamarras, abrigos y botas. Lo que me gusta de su estilo, aparte de verse tan “me-acaba-de-poner-esto-para-salir-a-fumar-un-cigarro” natural, es que todo lo que ella pone es fácil de usar. Creo que esto hace que su estilo es fácil de imitar y por eso es un ícono de la moda, porque lo que pone Kate, también me lo puedo poner. Ella usa piezas básicas, cuales aumenta con un abrigo auténtico o unas botas fregonas. Obviamente, Kate Moss La Jefa del Estilo, ha inspirado mi look de hoy con mezclilla básica y una playera suelta, arreglado con un saco estilo smoking y accessorios diferentes. Igual no me veo tan cool como Kate, pero si me siento así!

Throw-on-and-go Dress

I know a lot of people love summer because the days are longer, the abundance of outdoor activities and concerts, lots of pool time, and weekend road trips. I love summer for all these reasons, too, but when it comes to dressing for the season I feel so uninspired. I can´t get enough of black, layers, texture and obviously boots, but unless I want to sweat out my summer, those elements are pretty much off limits until November. When the weather is hot and humid and I have no AC, I am left with no other option but to wear cut-offs and tank tops while drinking a cold beer, which gets redundant and is not always the combination that leaves me feeling my best. But one summer solution I do love is the throw-on-and-go dress. The throw-on-and-go dress is convenient, creates a look with only one piece, and requires little to no accessorizing. I probably wear this dress every other weekend because not only is it extremely breathable for those scorching days, but the print and silhouette are playful enough to stand on their own. Literally, all I have to do is throw it on and go (without forgetting my favorite summer hat and sandals, of course)!
Sé que a mucha gente le encanta el verano porque los días duran más, la abundancia de actividades y conciertos en el aire libre, muchas albercadas y road trips en el fin de semana. También me encanta el verano por estas razones, pero cuando me visto para la temporada no me siento nada inspirada. Me encanta el negro, capas, texturas y obviamente botas, pero estos elementos los tengo que dejar hasta noviembre. Cuando estamos a 40 grados, está húmedo y no tengo clima en mi casa, sólo me deja la opción de ponerme shorts de mezclilla y tank tops mientras que tomo una cerveza helada, pero está combinación es redundante y no siempre me hace sentir lo mejor. Pero una solución del verano que me gusta mucho es el vestido de “ponérmelo-y-vámonos”. El vestido “ponérmelo-y-vámonos” es conveniente, crea un look completo con solo una pieza y no requiere muchos accessorios. Yo pongo ese vestido cada otro fin de semana porque se respira la tela y el estampado y la silueta está juguetón. Literalmente sólo me tengo que ponerlo y vámonos (sin dejar mi gorra e estandalías preferidas del verano, por supuesto)!
